HOLLYWOOD, CA – “From Yesterday,” the third hit single from 30 SECONDS TO MARS’ A Beautiful Lie, claims the #1 position on the Modern Rock chart this week. Ascending to the top slot after 22 weeks, “From Yesterday” is already demonstrating a longevity that recalls the band’s previous smash hit, “The Kill.” “The Kill” spent a record-setting 52 weeks on the Billboard Modern Rock airplay chart, peaking at & and earning the distinction of being the longest-running hit in the chart’s history.
“From Yesterday” is currently #10* at Active Rock radio and the accompanying 14-minute epic short film/video is getting play on MTV, MTV2, mtvU, FUSE, Music Choice and IMF. Jared went to the hospital this afternoon and against doctors orders played a show tonight in LA but unfortunately his health is dictating that we do not play tomorrow night's show in Sacramento. The band apologizes for this unforeseen circumstance, and promises to make it up to all of the fans. We are so sorry. Please wish him well and that he has a speedy recovery!

We've just learned that 30STM's performance slot at this year's Lollapalooza in Chicago has been changed. Previously scheduled for 8/5, the band is now slated to perform on Day 3 of the festival, Sunday, August 6th from 3:30-4:30pm on the Q101 stage in Grant Park. With the new record almost complete, we've decided on a change of scenery for the final moments of recording. We’re packing up and moving shop to an undisclosed location overseas. Studio Update After many long days and nights we have completed 80% of the new record. Things are going incredibly well and we are all looking forward to a little break. RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 3) - A shark attacked a married couple wading in the surf off North Carolina's Outer Banks on Monday, killing the man and leaving his wife in critical condition. The death came just two days after the first fatal shark attack this year in the United States. A 10-year-old boy was killed Saturday at Virginia Beach, Va. Dare County Emergency Management officials confirmed the man and woman were attacked around 6 p.m. in Avon, 135 miles south down the coast from Virginia Beach. ''It was beautiful day and there were several people in the water with them,'' said dispatcher N.H. Sanderson. ''The park service is interviewing these people now.'' Dr. Seaborn Blair at Avon Medical Center said the man was dead and the woman was in critical condition. The woman had been flown to the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Virginia with substantial wounds to her lower torso. Blair said he believed the couple were from northern Virginia. The victims' names were not released. They were believed to be in their 20s. The Virginia attack occurred Saturday in 4 feet of water about 50 yards from the shore off Sandbridge Beach, said Ed Brazle, division chief for the city's Emergency Medical Services. The shark ripped a 17-inch gash in 10-year-old David Peltier's left leg and did not release him until after the boy's father hit the shark on the head. The father carried David ashore but he died hours later after losing large amounts of blood from a severed artery. A police helicopter carrying marine scientists periodically flew over Virginia Beach on Monday, and several police boats were on the water. A shark was spotted 200 yards off a military beach that is closed to the public, but marine scientists did not think it was the shark that attacked David. Tourists and residents were talking about the shark attack Monday, but weren't put off enough to cancel hotel reservations or stay away from the beach. Many hotels were sold out, including the Comfort Inn, where owner Addison Richardson said no guests checked out early or expressed fears about sharks. ''It's very sad, but there's no reason to be afraid,'' Chaya Brod of Silver Spring, Md., said Monday as she walked along the sand at Virginia Beach while her husband and three of her children played in the surf. ''You have to be out deep in the water in order to be attacked. It doesn't bother me.'' In Florida, a sailor at the Mayport Naval Station near Jacksonville was bitten on the foot by a shark Sunday, Navy officials said Monday. The bite was apparently not serious, and the man was treated at a hospital and released. His name was not released. Fifty-two shark attacks have occurred worldwide this year, including three fatal ones, said George Burgess of the International Shark Attack File in Gainesville, Fla. Twenty-nine have been in Florida waters. Last year, there were 84 shark attacks worldwide, 53 in the United States, he said.

Surgeons implant chips to help blind men see

Surgeons have implanted silicon chips into the eyes of three blind men in an experiment to help them see again. Early signs are that the 59-year-old twins and a 72-year-old show no signs of rejecting the implants. Each chip is the size of a pinhead and contains 3,500 solar cells which act like the eye's natural photoreceptors. Three other patients successfully received the implants a year ago after they lost their vision through retinitis pigmentosa, a condition which causes degeneration of the retina. The latest operation was carried out in Illinois and recipients should get just enough vision to recognise faces or see objects in a room,
Science can now soak up clouds

A new super-absorbent powder is so strong it can make clouds disappear. Scientists hope one day it can be used to weaken hurricanes. It could also be used to banish rain from Wimbledon during the tennis fortnight or prevent the weather from stopping play at test matches. Each powder grain absorbs 2,000 times its weight in moisture becoming a biodegradable gel - much of which evaporates on the way down. In one experiment 9,000 pounds of the powder was scattered through a storm cloud more than 5,000 feet long and over 13,000 feet deep, making it vanish. The powder was invented by a team at Dyn-O-Mat, Florida, who say it could save lives during tropical storms. Peter Cordani who runs the company, told New Scientist: "It is the moisture that gives hurricanes their strength. "In the case of a huge hurricane, we would not be trying to soak it up altogether. But what we would do is break it up and reduce its strength and killing potential."
Schoolboy releases book on ethical computer hacking

A book written by an Indian schoolboy on ethical computer hacking has already sold 5,000 copies online before its official release. Ankit Fadia said he wrote the 624-page book on computer security systems, called the Unofficial Guide to Ethical Hacking, in 15 days. The 16-year-old is an authority on the subject as his own website was recently judged the second best hacking site in the world by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation. The site, hackingtruths.box.sk, has16,000 registered users and more than 100,000 hits a day, the South China Morning Post reports. Ankit said he has already written two sequels which will be on sale in 2002. He claims hackers are not criminals: "Hackers are the good guys who, by using their knowledge in a constructive manner, help organisations to guard their data and company secrets, and sometimes help justice by ferreting out electronic evidence of wrongdoing."

WASHINGTON (AP) - Three researchers told an angry and heated meeting of scientists today they will soon try to clone human beings, despite arguments of medical risk and ethical objections. ``I believe we have enough information to proceed with human cloning,'' Brigitte Boisselier, the director of Clonaid, a human cloning company, told a committee of the National Academy of Sciences. She also hinted that such experiments were already under way.
Great white sharks to be tracked by satellite

Australian scientists plan to place locating devices on the backs of great white sharks so they can warn surfers of attack risks. The plan follows five fatal shark attacks in the past 10 months - the average was previously one a year. Researchers hope to identify which beaches are most at risk by relaying instant satellite tracking data to coastguards. Whenever a tagged shark surfaces, expected to be at least once every two days, its position will be beamed to a satellite which will relay the information to the CSIRO and their website.
Father and son beat off shark with a stick

A father and son have beaten off an 18ft shark with a piece of wood after it started ramming their fishing boat. They were 15 miles off Rimini when their 18ft boat was attacked. Coastguards are monitoring the area in case the Great White heads for Italy's holiday beaches. A spokesman said: "It is a man-eater. I would advise people in the sea to be careful and if they see a fin to get out as quickly as possible." The men say they were lucky to escape with their lives as the shark was threatening to sink their boat, reports the Daily Mail. Giacomo Longhi said: "It just seemed to go on forever. He just kept hitting the boat over and over again." His father Tersilio added: "The shark was the length of our boat. I grabbed a piece of wood and kept hitting it, then it disappeared."
Wedding anniversary man fought off shark during attack

A Wall Street banker beat off a shark as it attacked him before swimming back to shore using only one leg. Before Krishna Thompson passed out on the Bahamian beach, he wrote his hotel room number in the sand so that he could be identified. Mr Thompson, who is now at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, after having his left leg amputated just below the knee, was on a wedding anniversary holiday. He had been swimming alone when the shark attacked him off the coast of Freeport, Grand Bahama. His wife of 10 years Ave Maria Thompson said: "He kept punching and punching. He has cuts on his hands because of that. He is so brave. To fight off a shark and then think to do that."
Killer shark attacks boat off US coast

A 14-foot-long shark repeatedly smashed into a boat carrying terrified tourists off the Massachusetts coast. No-one was hurt during the ten-minute ordeal, but the boat shook from side to side as the 700 pound shark slammed against the vessel. The creature was believed to be a man-eating Great White shark. The boat's captain, Joe Fitzback, said: "He was thrashing and banging it with his head, and slapping the side with his back. We all got drenched. "It shook the boat back and forth. I had to hold a couple of people's belts so they wouldn't go overboard." The Boston Herald says Mr Fitzback, who owns Top Rod Custom Charters, and his six passengers were nearing the end of a fishing tour when the attack started near Chatham and Monomoy Island, near South Beach. Mr Fitzback alerted the Chatham harbour master to the shark and boats have been patrolling the coastline looking for it. If it is found, crews are likely to shoot it.
Sightseers stroke great white sharks

Sightseers patting great white sharks as they feed have prompted calls for new laws in Australia to protect people. Boat operators are taking tourists to see great white sharks feasting on the carcass of a dead whale near Cape Jervis, south of Adelaide. Some onlookers have patted the sharks as they circled the whale, while others walked on the southern right whale's body. South Australia state Environment Minister Iain Evans said: "I am also appalled by the bizarre behaviour of walking across the back of dead whales or, for that matter, patting a great white shark while it is feeding. "These creatures are not toys. In the case of the great white, they can be extremely dangerous and it is clear the state government will need to look at changing the law in order to protect people too stupid to protect themselves."
Shark boy's uncle grabbed fish by tail

The uncle of an eight-year-old boy attacked by a shark tugged on its tail to free the child, whose right arm was bitten off in the attack. Jessie Arbogast, of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, remains in a critical condition following the attack off Florida on July 6. A National Park Service report provides new details of how Jessie's uncle, Vance Flosenzier, managed to pull the shark to shore following the attack. "Vance heard someone yell 'shark!' and a scream," Ranger Klein wrote in the report. Mr Flosenzier then saw a pool of blood in the water where the boy and other children were playing. Jessie's arm was still in the jaws of the 6ft 6ins bull shark when Mr Flosenzier ran into the water. "Vance grabbed the base of the tail of the shark and tried to pull it away from Jessie," Mr Klein wrote. "Vance pulled a second time and the shark came free." Jessie fell away from the shark, and an unidentified bystander caught him and carried him to shore, the report adds. The boy, who was initially conscious, went into convulsions and stopped breathing, his aunt told Mr Klein. Clinging to the tail, Mr Flosenzier began stepping backwards toward the beach. He described how the shark seemed to lose power as he dragged it backwards, but it kept trying to swim away. He beached the shark about 10 feet away from Jessie, witnesses said. His arm was bitten off but his uncle wrestled the shark to the shore and retrieved the arm from its jaws.
Pickpockets 'strip naked to avoid arrest'

Police in Hong Kong say female pickpockets have started stripping off to avoid arrest. They say suspects are ripping off their clothes whenever they're being chased by officers. Police say the pickpockets think officers will give up the chase, fearing the women will accuse them of indecent assault during arrest. A police spokesman says the latest incident involved a woman accused of stealing a shopper's purse. When officers chased her through the streets of Kowloon she stripped down to her knickers and escaped, the Malaysia Star reports
Scientists Claim Evidence of Life in Outer Space

LONDON (July 31) - Evidence of what could be life beyond our planet -- clumps of extraterrestrial bacteria in the Earth's upper atmosphere -- has been found, a team of international researchers said Tuesday. Although the bugs from space are similar to bacteria on Earth, the scientists said the living cells found in samples of air from the edge of the planet's atmosphere are too far away to have come from Earth. "There is now unambiguous evidence for the presence of clumps of living cells in air samples from as high as 40 kilometers, well above the local tropopause above which no air from lower down would normally be transported," Professor Chandra Wickramasinghe, an astronomer at Cardiff University in Wales, said in a statement. Wickramasinghe and scientists from India collected the space bugs from samples of stratospheric air using the Indian Space Research Organization's cryogenic sampler payload flown on balloons from a launch pad in Hyderabad, southern India. Using a fluorescent dye the scientists detected living cells in the sample and estimated by the way their distribution varied with height that they are falling from space. As much as a third of a ton of the biological material is raining down over the entire planet daily, by their estimation. SPACE BACTERIA Professor David Lloyd, a microbiologist at Cardiff University who examined the space bugs and co-authored the report, said they look like common terrestrial bacteria but there is no explanation of how they could have risen so high. "There would have to be some unusual event which would take particles from the Earth to a height of 40 kilometers," Lloyd said in a telephone interview. The bacteria could have hitched a ride on a rocket or satellite into space or they really could be from another planet. "We have no evidence for one or the other as yet," said Lloyd. "The most likely possibility is that the bacteria have arrived from another planet. I'd like to think that, at any rate." Lloyd has tried, so far unsuccessfully, to grow the bacteria in culture but said he hasn't found the right conditions yet. "It's the first pointer that it is possible to get evidence that there is life on other planets," he added. Wickramasinghe is convinced the space bugs provide strong support for the panspermia theory -- which suggests that life may have come from outer space in the form of germs or spores. "We have argued for more than two decades that terrestrial life was brought down to Earth by comets and that cometary material containing micro-organisms must still reach us in large quantities," he said.

A 2,300mph rail link from Britain across the Atlantic to the US could be built by 2030. The £30 billion undersea link would take just half an hour to cross from Liverpool or Bristol to New York or Boston. Engineers say the technology already exists to build such a supersonic rail link and prototypes are already being built in Japan. Frank Davidson, the man behind the transatlantic rail project, says it could be built by 2030 and it may replace air travel. Mr Davidson, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was involved in the Channel Tunnel project. He says boring a tunnel would be expensive and "old-fashioned". Instead the link would be a floating submerged tube anchored to the sea bed with cables. Magnets would levitate the train and friction would be eliminated by maintaining a vacuum inside the tunnel allowing supersonic speeds. He claims the link would be safer than conventional trains because there is no chance of derailment. Robbers abandon stolen cash in street

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE...People scrambled to get their hands on stolen money after armed bank robbers threw it away in a Florida street. The money was grabbed by about a dozen people, including a woman who abandoned her baby in a pram on the pavement. The drivers of a Rolls Royce and a Mercedes also attempted to grab some of the cash. Police say the two men got rid of the money from a Bank United branch in West Palm Beach because some notes were stained red from a hidden explosive dye pack. The robbers fled in a van which they abandoned with some more money inside it. One witness, Jimmy Charles, said: "At first I thought it was a car accident because everyone was getting out of their cars and bending down. "But when I got real close I saw that it was people grabbing up money - and lots of it." Police said around $1,000 (£697) was handed in by members of the public. It's not known how much was stolen.
Sex fiend jailed after recruited rape gang on internet

HERES ONE FOR THE KIDS...A Japanese man who used the internet to recruit a gang of rapists has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for his role in five sex attacks. Yokohama District Court found Akihiko Kamimura, 27, guilty of teaming up with four other men to rape the women between September 1999 and March 2000. A court official said Kamimura sent an email to a 37-year-old man in Osaka telling him whom to attack. The official added that Kamimura, who has been confined to a wheelchair after being injured in a road accident, received help from the Osaka man in raping two of the five women. Presiding Judge Hiroshi Yamura commented that Kamimura's "criminal responsibility is grave" because he used the internet to allow total strangers "to conspire easily to commit a bold crime". Kamimura's four accomplices were tried separately and received prison terms ranging from five to 16 years.

House Votes to Ban Human Cloning

WASHINGTON (July 31) - The House voted to ban all cloning of human embryos Tuesday night, casting Congress' first votes on the divisive ethical issue after a day of emotional debate on science, morality and the definition of life. ''This House should not be giving the green light to mad scientists to tinker with the gift of life,'' said Rep. J.C. Watts, R-Okla. ''Cloning is an insult to humanity. It is science gone crazy.'' Reps. Jim Greenwood, R-Pa., and Peter Deutsch, D-Fla., said their alternative to permit cloning for research could point the way to cures for terrible diseases. ''Why would we condemn the world and future generations not to have this miracle?'' Greenwood said. ''Some would say once you put Mr. Greenwood's cheek cell in and it divides, it becomes a soul.'' Lawmakers spent much of the day's debate plunging into the ethics of biotechnology. ''This is about providing moral leadership for a watching world,'' said Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., the chairman of the Judiciary Committee. ''Allowing the creation of cloned embryos by law would enable anyone to attempt to clone a human being.'' House members agreed on the general principle that they do not want the human species cloned, the technique that allowed scientists to create Dolly the sheep in 1997. The disagreement was over whether scientists should be able to clone human embryos and then use them in their search for cures to diseases. Cloned embryos would represent a new frontier, allowing scientists to produce stem cells that would be a perfect match to a person's DNA. Such stem cells could then be cultivated to produce healthy tissue for people with debilitating diseases, scientists hope But even a cloned embryo is a human being, opponents argued, saying Greenwood's bill would sanction their destruction. ''You might as well say Dolly isn't a real sheep even though she's now five years old,'' said Rep. Joseph Pitts, R-Pa. ''We are sailing into uncharted waters,'' Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y., said. ''Our decision here today could have consequences for years to come.''
Police Find 500 Skeletons in House

CALCUTTA, India (July 30) - Police in the eastern Indian city of Calcutta have found about 500 human skulls and skeletons in a house after responding to a complaint about a foul smell coming from the building. ''We have sealed the building after the Calcutta Municipal Corporation lodged a complaint with us yesterday,'' Prabir Kumar Saha, the police officer investigating the case, told Reuters on Friday. ''Investigations are still at an early stage and a clearer picture on what these (skulls and skeletons) were being used for will emerge soon,'' he added. Javed Khan, the senior official whose complaint prompted Thursday's raid on the house, said it was possible the skulls and skeletons were being used for Tantric practices. Tantric priests believe human bones are an essential part of their rites in order to attain ''siddhi'' (salvation). Tantric rites, which are as old as Vedic practices, were adopted by the later Buddhists and spread to countries like Tibet. In June, police found 86 human skulls at a bus stand in Siliguri city, some 375 miles north of Calcutta.
Dog Eats Money, Returns It Intact

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (July 24) - A Swedish bullterrier swallowed 1,000 crowns ($94) but returned the money, almost unspoiled, to its mistress the natural way, the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter reported on Tuesday. The six-year old bitch Tassilla gobbled up two 500-crown bills. The first bill emerged the next morning, smelly but undamaged, followed by the second during an evening walk. ''They (the bills) are slightly yellow and I think I'll iron them,'' mistress Gunilla Gonon-Sabelstrom was quoted as saying.
Band leader 'bit students on arms and ears'

A US school band leader has been suspended after allegedly biting some of his student musicians. James Wilson, band director of Albert Gallatin School near Pittsburgh, sunk his teeth into several student's arms and ears it is claimed. The school district has suspended Mr Wilson while an investigation is carried out. Parents and past pupils have rallied to support the popular teacher, who often 'horses around,' with children. He has guided the marching band to several awards. Mr Wilson has refused to comment to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Sex shop robber 'threatened cashier with finger gun'

A teenager from Oregon has been charged with attempting to rob a sex shop while pointing his finger like a gun at the cashier. Patrick Michael Halberg, 18, is said to have demanded money from the cashier the Kiss 'N' Tell shop in Eugene. Police say that the cashier laughed at him when he tried to threaten her with his 'finger gun'. He then called officers who arrested Halberg on the street
McDonald's Sued for Maggot-Infested Cheeseburger

DETROIT (July 3) - An 11-year old Detroit boy filed a $1 million lawsuit against fast food giant McDonald's Corp. on Monday after he allegedly ate part of cheeseburger that was infested with maggots, his lawyer said. The boy, Vincent Ingram, discovered the maggots after chomping into the cheeseburger at home on June 19, said the attorney, Arnold Reed. ''His sister is standing next to him and starts freaking out, because she sees these things crawling around his mouth and out of his mouth. She starts screaming,'' Reed told Reuters in an interview. Reed said Ingram swallowed at least half a dozen of the maggots. As evidence, his mother saved the rest of the cheeseburger and the boy's vomit. ''Since this incident, he's been freaking out. He won't eat,'' Reed added. The lawsuit filed in Wayne County Circuit Court in Michigan says Ingram ate the cheeseburger shortly after it was bought, but does not specify in what amount of time. McDonald's in a statement called the allegations ''questionable,'' and said it had not received any facts to back up the claims. ''We have not been provided with any evidence to validate this claim,'' the company's statement said.
Policeman shoots himself as he scratches his head with pistol

A Turkish policeman accidentally shot himself as he was scratching his head with his pistol. The 24-year-old officer from Izmir is in a serious condition in the city's hospital. The bullet reportedly entered his skull above the temple on the left side of his head. Colleagues say he scratched his head several times before accidentally pulling the trigger as he was leaving the police station, Sabah newspaper reports.

THIRTYSECONDSTOMARS are currently in the studio in los angeles working on their debut anthology titled WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSE. They have reached the halfway point and everything is going according to plan. producer BOB EZRIN (pink floyd, kiss, alice cooper) is at the helm. THIRTYSECONDSTOMARS have compiled well over fifty songs in preparation for this project, only ten will make the cut. Preparations for touring will take place immediately following the completion of WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSE . look for video footage of THIRTYSECONDSTOMARS in the studio in the next few days...
